| Student Legal Services provides volunteers
with the opportunity to both enhance their legal
education and make a positive contribution to the community
by helping your fellow U of A students and people living
in poverty.
Some examples of what your SLS experience may include
are:
- running a trial in Provincial Court
- attending a drop-in centre or homeless shelter
on a regular basis
- working with a lawyer on an extensive research project
- assisting someone in filling out the required documents
to obtain a divorce
- appearing before an administrative tribunal such
as the Worker's Compensation Board
- launching a suit in small claims court to assist
someone in retaining their security deposit, or
- applying the knowledge and skills that you learn
in law school to answer questions for individuals
who phone or walk-in to our office, or for those that
you encounter in the community.
Volunteer recruitment is in September of every
year. At that time, you may attend our
various information sessions to meet us and learn
more about
our various projects. You may then sign up for one
or more of them by downloading and filling out
an application
form and submitting it to reception at Emily Murphy
House.
This form
may be
submitted at any time, however placement cannot always
be guaranteed. The only requirement to become
a member
is that you are enrolled in the LLB program in the
Faculty of Law at the University of Alberta or
in a combined
program which includes the LLB program.
If you are interested in volunteering your time at
Student Legal Services, please submit an application
form. Please do not apply unless you are willing
to make a serious commitment of at least two hours,
every second week.
If you have any further questions regarding Volunteering,
please email us at info@slsedmonton.com.
