The Legal Reform Project participates
in activities and research that directly impacts individuals
surviving poverty in our communities.
As of July 2006 we have been researching the implementation
of Mental Health Courts into the Alberta Justice System.
The first Mental Health Courts were implemented in the
mid-1990's in the United States. Since this initial
grassroots movement these types of courts have expanded
to over 120 across the United States. The Ontario Court
of Justice has also been a pioneer in this movement,
opening the first Mental Health Court in Canada in 1998
in downtown Toronto.
If you work with those in need of mental health support
or are a member of the legal community, and would like
to help us with this initiative, please contact us at
