What can Pro Bono do for an
organisation?
- research legal issues relevant to the organisation
or their clients
- contribute to advocacy work on behalf of the organisation
- produce reports and policy papers
- re-draft board policy and manuals
- review new materials (internet, recent case law,
periodicals etc)
- update resources
- perform legal education, such as writing brochures
or presenting workshops
- provide legal support and information to clients
or an organisation
- assist in intakes and assessments
What kinds of organisations may receive assistance
from the Pro Bono Students Canada Project?
As a project of Student Legal Services, Pro Bono serves
non-profit organisations which predominantly, either
directly or indirectly, assist impoverished individuals.
To determine whether or not your organisation fits within
our mandate, please contact our Coordinator by email
or telephone.
How can your organisation get involved with
Pro Bono at the University of Alberta?
Step #1
Contact the Student Coordinator by phone,
fax or email.
Step #2
Submit a Organization
Membership Application/Profile form (.pdf
file 100kb) and Organization
Waiver (.pdf file 100kb) .
The forms with the original signature
must be submitted to the organisation.
Step #3
Create a job description. If you have trouble with
this, please contact the Coordinator, who will be
more than happy to assist you.
Step #4
Find a supervising lawyer. If your organization cannot
find one, the Coordinator may be able to assist you.
Step #5
Meet your student(s). This initial meeting should
take place within the first week or two of the project.
Step #6
Keep your student(s) busy and well supervised. Organisations
are expected to make contact with the student at least
once a month either by phone, email or meeting in
person.
Step #7
At the end of the placement, submit the Evaluation
form (.pdf file 100kb).
