 About the Human Rights Project

The Human Rights Project became a part of Student Legal Services in 2021 and is dedicated to helping people in the Edmonton area who cannot afford a lawyer. Partnered with the Alberta Human Rights Commission, caseworkers can assist self-represented litigants before the Alberta Human Rights Commission.  We also have various legal information booklets available online.

WHO CAN WE HELP?

Whether or not we can help you will depend on your age, income, and the nature of the legal issue, and the level of court in which the legal matter will be heard. Please note that we can help all University of Alberta undergraduate students with a valid OneCard whose legal matters fall within our scope of service.

Income Guidelines

You must meet our guidelines before SLS can help you. You will need to provide proof of income documentation such as: last year’s tax return/assessment, or your last 3 months of pay stubs, bank statements, or statements showing income assistance (such as Alberta Works/Income Support Alberta or AISH).

Nature of the Legal Issue

We can provide assistance with human rights claims and responses under the Alberta Human Rights Act and act as individual’s agents before the Alberta Human Rights Commission. In addition, we can provide basic legal information over the phone on the following topics:

  • Discrimination in the areas of employment, goods and services, tenancy, publications and notices, and membership in trade unions

  • Making or responding to a claim under the Alberta Human Rights Act

  • The human rights complaint process

  • Remedies under human rights legislation

What Can we do?

Law student caseworkers act as agents at the Alberta Human Rights Commission. If you open a file with us a student caseworker will be assigned to act as an agent on behalf of your human rights claim or response. All students work under the supervision of our volunteer lawyers.

Caseworkers can help:

  • Give you legal information

  • Draft complaints and responses

  • Act as your agent at mediations, Tribunal Dispute Resolutions, and hearings

  • Act as your agent at the Alberta Human Rights Tribunal and speak to your human rights issue

Human Rights Caseworkers can only assist with matters before the Alberta Human Rights Commission. We cannot assist with matters outside the Commission, such as those that fall under federal human rights legislation. We do not assist with constitutional law or charter claims.

We only appear in Edmonton, if your matter is in another location SLS will not be able to help you.
